ESPN's own Howie Schwab answers my questions on the Olympics, late football legend Gene Upshaw and baseball.
Swimmers Michael Phelps and Dara Torres both defined what it means to be an Olympian in their own way. What impact will each have in the history of the Olympics?
Phelps is a legend. He handled the pressure beautifully. I have met him at the ESPYs and the ESPN commercial shoot and he is a great guy. He has worked hard and he deserves all the accolades he gets. Dara is a great story and I was sorry she just fell short of gold. Her performance meant a lot to an older generation.
Jamaican runner Usain Bolt has shattered records in the 100 and 200 meter dash. Is he the greatest runner ever?
Bolt has to rank among the greatest runners of all time. I still can't believe he pulled up during the 100 meter run and still set the record. Give him credit for greatness even if his showmanship was maligned .
Any other comments on the Olympic Games?
I was really impressed with the U. S. women's basketball team. Australia had a solid team and it turned into a mismatch. I was thrilled for Lisa Leslie who got her fourth gold medal.
Your thoughts on the passing of NFL legend Gene Upshaw.
Upshaw's passing came as a total shock. He meant so much to the game as a Hall of Fame player and labor leader. My sympathy goes out to the family. It will be interesting to see the ramifications on the NFLPA in the future.
Coming down the home stretch in baseball, who will be one of the surprises towards the end? Disappointment?
The New York Yankees are a disappointment but injuries are a legitimate excuse. The San Diego Padres shouldn't be this bad.
