Football, the good, the bad, and the very ugly!

By Davin Colten

College football is always the best time of year, and this season is no different, with high scoring games that make the NFL look like overpaid, whining prima donnas, they should take a long look at college football, and remember a time when young men played the sport for fun, for the love of the game, and not for what incentives they could get out of it. If that seems harsh, it is not; it is a comparison to Hollywood, who stars are grossly overpaid for the types of films we have to endure in the theatres nowadays. Long gone are the days of the great film actors of the 1940's, the real movie stars who could act, who had talent, and were beautiful. Those days no longer exist. Now we are bombarded with horrible acting, showing that anyone can act.

You have actors and actresses who only care about how much money they can suck out of our pockets. Getting paid 20 million or more a picture, while people are struggling to put food on the table for their family and just keep a roof over their heads, they should be ashamed of themselves, and so should the producers and production companies that pay them this large sum and give into their diva demands. No actor on earth is worth that much money! They have forgotten what acting is all about, and the people who pay the ticket fees, buy the magazines, and watch those entertainment shows are partly to blame for this epidemic.

The Texas Longhorns had a fantastic win Saturday over Rice, 52 to 10. Ranked 7, and in my opinion, should be ranked in the top 5 after this win, have shown their strength this season with three straight victories. A solid team showing no signs of slowing down, the Longhorns have a great chance at making a bowl game this year, and that is mostly do to the wonderful efforts of their quarterback, Colt McCoy. McCoy threw four touchdown passes against Rice, giving the Longhorns their third win of the season. A contender for the Heisman Trophy, McCoy is on the short list with other great quarterbacks. Oklahoma's quarterback Sam Bradford is a definite frontrunner, each game he seems to get better. These two young men have a sensational shot at winning the Heisman this year, and should have no problem getting drafted in the NFL.

Also on that Heisman list this year is Tim Tebow from Florida, who helped his team to another great win Saturday, Chase Daniel from Missouri, Max Hall from BYU, and never count out USC quarterback Mark Sanchez. Sanchez seems like another rising star among the USC quarterbacks, possibly following in the footsteps of Matt Leinart. And while Penn State is still not ranked in the top ten, they definitely should be. Having won every game this season, slaughtering their opponents with such high scores, they should without question be ranked in the top 5. I do not understand why they have not moved higher up on the ranking?

As for Matt Leinart, well, unfortunately he will be sitting on the bench this season unless Kurt Warner gets hurt. The Arizona Cardinals drafted Leinart, but have not given him the opportunity to really play, to gain experience to become the great quarterback he was in college. And he is not alone, another quarterback who shares his same unfortunate fate, is Brady Quinn. The Cleveland Browns have also placed him on the bench this season, another huge mistake. Leinart like Quinn, are both spending their youth standing on the sidelines watching the game instead of playing the game. While they were superstars in college for USC and Notre Dame, the NFL have disposed of them as easily as a tissue. What are they doing sitting on the sidelines when there are so many teams already struggling this season. Why are these two men not playing? That is the enigma. They should be starting quarterbacks, the teams who have not won a game this year shou ld somehow, someway get these men on their team. And after Notre Dame's horrible performance this Saturday against Michigan State, maybe Charlie Weis should rethink Jimmy Clausen and look towards recruiting a better quarterback for next season. Clausen is no Brady Quinn!

While most people are saying that the Dallas Cowboys are the best team in the NFL and have the best chance of making it to the Super Bowl, I would not count out the San Diego Chargers. They have one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Sure they have lost their first two games, but look at how they lost them. They played in Denver last week against the Broncos with a horrible call by an official who mistook a fumble for an incomplete pass. Was he blind? That was one of the worst calls ever by an official. They should have fined him, severely. They fine players like T.O. of the Dallas Cowboys for celebrating after getting a touchdown. They enforce fifteen-yard penalties to college teams for unsportsman like conduct for celebrating after a touchdown, so why do they not charge officials for blowing calls and changing the whole course of the game?

The Chargers should have that loss taken off their record for the season. The first bad call was in the beginning of the game when the officials could not get the instant reply running, which gave the Broncos the ball instead of giving it back to the Chargers, which led to a Broncos touchdown. Then later in the game when Ed Hochuli made the horrible call saying it was an incomplete pass instead of a fumble, he should go back to refereeing 101! Even Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Culter admitted to saying it was a fumble, showing some integrity on a team that has a coach saying he loved the officials and all their calls where the right ones. Mike Shanahan should be ashamed of himself for not having any integrity. Morally impregnable, has he never heard of the phrase, obviously not!

With all the rough and tumble and the drama on and off the field, football season never looked so good, bad, and ugly. Another year of horrid calls, another year of over hyped, over paid players, a season without Tom Brady. What? What are the New England Patriots going to do now? Their golden boy is gone. What will the NFL do for ratings now that their model like quarterback who was the cover boy for perfection is out for the entire season? Looks like his model girlfriend, Gisele Bundchen, will get him all to herself this year. Sorry NFL, you just can't compete with a supermodel!
