I leave the country for three weeks and what happens?
The NFL goes to hell in a hand basket.
Tom Brady suffers a season ending injury in game one. Brett Favre leads the Jets to a win; Aaron Rodgers does the same in Titletown and is embraced by CheeseHeads as he does the Lambeau Leap. Shawn Merriman has his lights put out; Jeff Garcia is benched and has a hissy fit, rookie quarterback, Matt Ryan leads the Dirty Birds to a solid home victory and Vince Young is put on suicide watch. Alex Smith goes on IR and appears to be a first round bust. The Colts lose to the Bears! And the Seahawks lose to the Toronto Bills.
And, where was I? Well I was eating platters of fine Italian food, drinking endless bottles of smooth Italian wine, soaking in Italian history, art, culture and swimming on the Amalfi Coast .
So ask me if I give a hoot about the results of Week One?
Sure I do, although I was living La Dolce Vita, I'm still a football fan. But life is short and the NFL season is long.
Of course the Really, Really, Big News, is the season ending injury to Tom Brady, NFL quarterback extraordinaire and Mr. Pin-Up. This is the injury heard round the football world. So much has been written about Tom's knee that one wonders if the NFL will even survive. I also read a ridiculous contention that female fans have turned off their TV's and shelved their NFL season as they mourn the loss of number 12. Hogwash.
First of all, there are 32 teams in the league and Tom is just one player, a gorgeous specimen I admit, but not a member of the team I root for. So for me Tom's departure simply increases the chances the Pats won't win another Super Bowl, and for that I am not sorry.
So what does week two look like?
As I write this it's Saturday night and the games will be played before Femmefan goes to "press", but I have to try and catch up with the season and challenge those fans out there who think they know a thing or two about football.
Week Two Picks * Results In Red
The Colts are 0-1 and something isn't right. This week they play the Vikes. The Vikes have QB problems of their own. Can the Colts bounce back? I think they will find a way to win this game. Pick Colts.
Winner
Da Bears and Kyle Orton, who'd of thunk. The Panthers are tough at home, I give them the edge. Pick Panthers.
Winner
D-r-a-m-a - The Titans and the Vince Young drama meet the Bengals and the Chris Henry drama. I like the Titans to rally behind their Quarterback and get the win on the road. Pick Titans.
Winner
The Packers at the Lions.Oh those Lions look really bad. Mr. Rodgers makes it two in a row in Motown. Pick Packers.
Winner
Raiders at the Chiefs. Normally I would go with the Chiefs at home, and yet I wonder. Can the Raiders really be this bad? Rob Ryan did some ass chewing after the Raiders were embarrassed by the Broncos. Can they fight their way back to respectability? No.
Pick Chiefs.
Loser
New York Giants at Rams.No contest, the Rams are awful. Pick Giants.
Winner
The Toronto Bills looked pretty good last week, but the Jags are tough at home. I like the Jags. Pick Jags.
Loser
The Saints at the Redskins. The Redskins are a mystery. Every year they spend money like there's no salary cap, and every year they seem to go nowhere. The Saints on the other hand play good, smart football. I like the Saints. Pick Saints.
Winner
The Niners at Seattle . Oh boy, I keep hoping the Niners will turn the corner, but just when I think they are going to improve they go the other way. The only upside this week is the fact that the Hawks are hurting. My heart overrules my head, I stay with the Niners. Pick Niners.
Winner
Falcons at Tampa Bay . Matt Ryan shocked everyone last week, but this week Gruden will game plan for him. I think the Bucs defense will stop the Falcons. Pick Bucs.
Winner
Chargers at Denver . This should be a doozy of a game. I see the Chargers wavering just a little without Merriman; the Broncos seem to be very confident behind the play of Jay Cutler. I give this one to the Broncos. Pick Broncos.
Winner
Patriots at the Jets. This game may define the division this season. No Brady for the Pats, Brett Favre for the Jets. You know Belichick is going to come after Brett and try to force him to turn over the ball. If the Jets defense can outplay the Pats defense the Jets will take this game. Pick Jets.
Loser
Miami at Arizona . The Cardinals are a much improved team. The Miami Dolphins, not so much. The Dolphins have a chance if they can attack Kurt Warner and force him out of the pocket. If they can they will upset the Cardinals. Pick Dolphins.
Loser
Steelers at Browns. Great division rivalry. The Steelers looks as solid as any team in the NFL. The Browns will have to play aggressive defense to win this game. Pick Steelers.
Winner
Eagles at Cowboys. A gem of a Monday Night match-up. Both quarterbacks can score points, both defenses can play aggressively. I see the Boys winning this important match up.
Winner
Baltimore at Texans. The Ravens and Texans are a "pick-em" for me. I'll take the Texans since they're the home team.
Game postponed due to Hurricane Ike
