Saturday was another exciting day in college football. First Jimmy Clausen, sophomore quarterback for the Fighting Irish, actually led his struggling team to a victory over Purdue this weekend. After finally cutting off his long blonde locks, and giving his appearance a more kempt look, the young quarterback seemed more at ease as he led Notre Dame to a much needed win. This team is nowhere near as great as it once used to be with the exceptional Brady Quinn as quarterback, but with a lot of work, a lot of needed practice, they just might have a good season.
Coach Charlie Weis needs to work more with his young quarterback if they stand any chance of gaining back the respect Notre Dame once had a few years ago. Nobody expects them to get into a bowl game this year, even though they have a fairly easy schedule this season, each game seems like a constant struggle trying to get points on the board. My advice, get a new kicker! After missing several easy and much needed points, the kicker missed an easy thirty-yard field goal, just another among a long list of misses so far this season. I have said before that the position of kicker is only second to quarterback on how important that person is on a team. If you cannot count on your kicker and rely on him to kick field goals and extra points, than you have to rely on getting touchdowns all the time when in the red zone. You should be able to have a kicker that can kick field goals with his eyes close, like in basketball when players have to make free throws, it should be effortlessly.
And while Notre Dame pulled off a win at home, three outstanding teams in college football have emerged as frontrunners not only for the individual Heisman Trophy award, but for the BCS Bowls. This year the Rose Bowl should be played by Texas , Oklahoma , and or Penn State . It is their time to shine in the spotlight. These three teams are by far the best in college football. Oklahoma should move up to be ranked number one after USC lost this week to Oregon State . Penn State should move into the top ten at least if not the top five, and Texas, they should move into the number three or two spot after a spectacular win over Arkansas, 52 to 10. The Longhorns are now 4-0 just like Penn State and Oklahoma . All three teams have not lost a game, have not struggled at all, and have proven their ability and talent by the exceptionally high scoring games in which they have defeated their opponents.
Texas quarterback Colt McCoy had five touchdowns against Arkansas . He threw three touchdowns and ran for the other two. He is one of those rare quarterbacks that can also run with the ball and not just throw it. Most quarterbacks do not have that ability, are not fast on their feet, but McCoy shows he can do both. This multi talented quarterback is a definite favorite for the Heisman Trophy this year, but he is not alone, with such fierce competition this season, it will come down to a real nail bitter between junior Colt McCoy, and Oklahoma Sooners sophomore quarterback Sam Bradford. With a win over TCU this Saturday, and four touchdown passes, Bradford is a definite favorite among many in college football. He only improves with each game, and it is hard to believe that Bradford is only a sophomore.
While these three teams seemed to win with ease, there were several top teams that faltered this weekend. No matter how hard quarterback Tim Tebow played this week, he could not get his team to a victory, as the number four ranked Florida Gators lost to Ole Miss. Another big upset was number three ranked Georgia, who lost to number eight ranked Alabama . After USC lost this week, and Ohio State still struggling to pull off another win, three teams have roared loudly with their victories, Texas , Oklahoma , and Penn State . If you want to watch perfection, these are the teams to watch, and while they slaughter their opponents each week with an easy win, more and more teams will now try to beat them, to bring them down, to hand them a loss. They can try, but it will not be such an easy task.
