Just had my fifth Cosmo, feelin a little woozy, but feelin pretty damn good.oops. Was that my cell phone that just fell into the toilet? Ok girlfriend, you're probably wondering why I'm writing about the movie, Sex and the City, instead of writing about the Lakers vs. the Celtics, or the Yanks vs. the A's, or the fact that Pacman Jones is gonna be a Cowboy.
The truth is I'm totally bored with the sports news. So it seemed appropriate and perhaps a bit self indulgent but I'm gonna concentrate my time and efforts on something a little more substantive than the NFL, NHL, MLB and the NBA.
I am covering Sex and the City for my BFF, best friend forever.

The reason Sex and the City was such a mega hit on HBO is because it showed a side of female friendship many are not aware of, and when I say many, I mean men-y.
When women get together they have more fun than any group of men can. Why? Because for women, having fun is not defined by getting laid (well ok sometimes), getting drunk (well a maybe little bit), or watching a football game (ok, we can do that too).
Women in a group are outrageous, outlandish, and yes brutally frank about their feelings and their sex lives. Add a little fuel to the fire in the form of alcohol and you have yourself a bona fide chick-bull shit session, pee in your pants - laugh riot.
The Sex and the City HBO series showed that women can be true friends and they really do care about one another. The series was a dramatic departure from the way women have been portrayed (usually as phony back stabbing bitches).
I knew this all along, but when I introduced the series to my thirty-something son in law he was somewhat shocked and surprised by the "ladies" very blunt language and references to men's body parts, in sometimes not very complimentary or "lady-like" language. Needless to say my group of "dames" haves no problem tossing out a few F-bombs during a conversation.
It's a side of women many men have never seen.
If you ever get a chance to ask a Chippendale Dancer about his experiences with women ( as I did) he will undoubtedly tell you that women out on the town are pretty damn aggressive an uninhibited.
Do you think a woman is going get a lap dance and not grab hold of something? Be real.
Female friendship has deep and sustaining power. The Sex and the City series explored those relationships as no other series ever has. The surprise is that it was accepted with all its borderline porno (yes, I loved those sex scenes and still recall Samantha and the Swing!) and fashion side bars, by such a wide audience.
It worked because it showed that in spite of the ladies' very different personalities they supported each other.
The fact that women were shown to be non judgmental is, in my opinion, a revelation to many men.
My BFF and I began our night with a few Cosmos and a nice steak dinner. We then stumbled over to the theatre with a nice buzz and high expectations.
The HBO series ran for six years and it still held our attention, it's one of those simple pleasures you don't want to end.
The series ending left many unanswered questions and we wanted some answers!
What had happened to the four ladies in the four years (how time does fly) since the show went off the air? We wanted to know what life had in store for Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha after the death of the HBO series.
Of course the biggest and most compelling story line is still Carrie and Mr. Big.
Did they live happily ever after? Did he really commit to her? Did she change and settle down to family life? Or did the magic end? Would we ever know if he was in fact, BIG?
When the series ended, Samantha seemed to have found happiness with Smith, and Mr. Big, once again, was back in Carrie's life.
Girlfriend, I do not intend to spoil the fun for you.
Just know that men come and go, you get married, you have kids, you get fat and you go through a lot of changes, not all of them good. But a naked, wet, soapy, male body is never boring, at any age, as exemplified by the shower scene featuring gorgeous, "Dante" or French actor Gilles Marini, oh la la. Definitely worth the price of admission.
The enduring quality of this series and now this two and a half hour movie is the bond between these four females. That is an enduring story and one that heretofore only women who have friends that they love deeply can understand.
I just hope their story continues and is as enduring as my friendship with my best friend, Carol, who will turn 60 this August.
