This weekend I saw the highly anticipated film of the summer. The movie everyone will be talking about. WANTED. I have been looking forward to seeing this film ever since I saw the trailer several months ago in theatres. Unlike most people, this is the exact type of movie I love. It has every element you could possibly imagine and more. Perfectly cast, I could see this film again, and I did, three times. It is one of the best films I have ever seen. I love the action, the suspense, the blood and bullets, the way the film moves in the sequences when they train the lead character to join the fraternity of assassins. The film’s appeal of being an assassin looked exciting, yet dangerous, but sexy, it made me want to be recruited. I know movie magic makes it look enticing, it would be exciting to be one, but I think, I would rather be with one. 

James McAvoy has always been one of my favorites. From his earlier film career, he has always captured my attention when on the screen. He steals every scene he is in. The Scottish born actor who puts on a perfect American accent, is a definite leading man. Super hot. Super sexy. Super talented. When my book Lie with the Devil gets made into a film, I would want McAvoy to portray the lead character, the sexy, arrogant, Irishman, Colin Murphy. He would be my top casting choice. He is perfect in romantic dramas, and now, action films.

Most people would never think of James McAvoy as an action hero, but they were spot on when they cast him in this role. Towards the end of the film when his character is shirtless, wearing only a pair of skintight jeans, women in the theatre went wild. His raw sex appeal combined with his ability to portray the everyday man is what makes McAvoy captivating. The way he embodies the character is absolutely stunning, you would never think of him as an action star, but after this film, he should be doing more.

McAvoy plays Wesley, the unassuming, easily affected ordinary man who sits behind a desk day after day in a tiny cubicle, hating his job, hating his boss, hating his best friend who is shagging his girl. His character seems to drift through life, like most of us, allowing these things to endlessly go on, emotionally repressed from standing up for himself, being taken advantage of. He encompasses Wesley so perfectly, everyone can relate to his character. Then suddenly one day he meets the mysterious and ultra sexy Fox played by Angelina Jolie, and his world is never the same, ever again.

Jolie shines in her role, as if it was perfectly scripted for her to portray, a role she was destined to play. It reminds me of her earlier career in Tomb Raider, she incorporates the essence of the character, the perfect embodiment of a female action star. From the moment we meet her character she lights up the screen and never fades. It is one fast ride. Doing a lot of her own stunts is what makes Jolie different from most actresses. Not having to rely on a stuntwoman for every action packed scene is what makes her stand out. One scene in particular where she is bending backwards out of a car, driving with one foot, shooting at another car during the high-speed chase, is hypnotically mesmerizing. No other actress would even fathom trying something like that. No other actress could pull it off. And that is what makes everyone love her character.

McAvoy and Jolie are beautifully matched in this high-octane thriller. These two actors should play in more films together. The on screen chemistry is a dynamite combination, equally balancing each other. And although I won’t give away the twist ending, I have to admit, I did figure it out ahead of time, before the rest, but I usually do. One of the best action movies this summer, it might not surpass box office success when it comes to more known favorites like Batman and Hancock, but it will definitely command an audience. Wanted is a must see movie, for everyone.

Most reviews that I read, the reviewers only gave it two or two and a half stars out of five, I think they are mental, highly mistaken as to what makes for a great movie, and missed the whole point. You want to be entertained. If there were only five stars, I would give it a ten. And what makes this movie so real, is not only the fabulous, innately talented actors portraying the lead characters, but the message it brings, especially with the last line of the film. When James McAvoy’s character Wesley says, “What the f_ _ k have you done lately,” I think pretty much sums up the entire movie. It sure makes you think, what the f _ _ k have I been doing lately with my life. The answer is simple. I need to be doing a whole lot more!
