ESPN’s own Howie Schwab, sports guru extraordinaire, gives me his opinions on this year’s NBA Draft, my home state team Milwaukee Brewers, Tiger Woods, and Wimbledon. The NBA draft is over. Who were some of your surprises and disappointments? Who did Dick Vitale think got looked over?
I was surprised that Seattle took Russell Westbrook at number four and I think Dickie V. agreed with me on that. I thought Jason Thompson was an early surprise but he could pan out. I was also surprised with George Hill going in round one and Darrell Arthur going a little later. Chris Douglas-Roberts should have gone higher than number 40. I liked what the New Jersey Nets did with Brook Lopez, Ryan Anderson and Douglas-Roberts. I think the Indiana Pacers improved themselves overall with the likes of TJ Ford, Brandon Rush and company.
The Milwaukee Brewers have been up and down but on a roll as of late. How will they do after the All-Star Break?
I think the Brewers have come to life after a short stay in the division cellar. If the pitching hangs in, watch out.
Tiger Woods is out for the rest of the season. What player(s) will challenge each week for the top spot?
I think golf is a sport where there is a lot of depth. Look at the Buick Open with Kenny Perry edging Woody Austin and Bubba Watson. Bubba has not won on the PGA Tour. That is why this is a great sport to watch because it is unpredictable. Tiger is Tiger and he will be missed by many. Fans of the sport understand there are a lot of talented players out there, and there is great drama when there is competition.
Wimbledon has its share of upsets. Who were the more surprising ones and why??
There were a lot of them. Andy Roddick and James Blake early, though I knew Janko Tipsarevic was a tough opponent for Andy. It turns out the opponent that beat Blake (Rainer Schuttler) has been on a roll and is in the quarters. Maria Sharapova lost early and Ana Ivanovic's loss surprised me a bit too.
