The last game of the season for Notre Dame ended with a smashing victory. Seniors and fifth year seniors like the sensational Tom Zbikowski played their very last game as a Notre Dame football player in college Saturday. Laughs, tears, memories consumed the players, knowing they were walking off the field for the very last time. Notre Dame this year was nowhere near as great a team as they were last year, but this season did end with back to back wins. Winning last week against Duke and this Saturday's win against Stanford, gave the Irish their third victory of the season, and allowed the seniors and fifth year seniors to close their college football days with smiles on their faces, and a memory that will last them a lifetime.
Players come and go, some move on to other venues, moving in different directions other than football. Some try their hand at professional football and go into the NFL draft. And for some like Tom Zbikowski, they have the world at their feet. He was one of the best football players in college last year, and has emulated that same type of innate talent this year, even though his team was not up to par. He even got to play quarterback last week against Duke, and he did a great job. Today's game against Stanford, he ran the ball back for more than half the length of the field, and ran in for a touchdown, even though it was called back because of a penalty against the Irish, he still played a fantastic game.
Without the great Brady Quinn as quarterback, Notre Dame has struggled this season to put it nicely. Jimmy Clausen started off with a rough awakening in his quarterback debut, but has improved from the beginning of the year. These last two victories hopefully have given him confidence and reassurance that next year will look bright. Maybe next year Clausen will even begin the season with a win, throwing the ball more aggressively down the field with less sacks, and more touchdowns. But he and the rest of the Notre Dame football team will have to do it without one key player, one player that seems like the whole team making touchdowns, sacks, tackles, and most importantly, interceptions. He is definitely the most valuable player on the team this year at Notre Dame. The Irish will sadly miss him and what he brings to this team as a leader. Tom Zbikowski has made a name for himself in Notre Dame history, and in college football.
The multi talented athlete not only plays football, but is a boxer. He even mentioned pursuing another venue, expressing interest in working for the CIA. They always look for strong, undaunted, young men. Zbikowski would make a perfect fit. He would make a great addition to any team, whether it was playing professional football or the Central Intelligence Agency. Actually, if you have the choice to choose between going into the NFL or CIA, which would you choose? A talented player such as himself you think would automatically place himself in the draft. But the other does sound tempting. Think of James Bond and Jason Bourne, we have all fallen for the seductive secret agent that has a bit of charm, arrogance, and dashing good looks. Tom Zbikowski definitely falls into that category. He seems the perfect candidate if they were recruiting. I saw the Colin Farrell flick The Recruit, traveling all over the world, having an incredible adventure filled with passion, peril, and intrigue, sounds alluring to me.
The first time I saw Tom Zbikowski, I was standing on the Notre Dame sidelines, and he walked right passed me. 6'0 tall, taut, a better looking version of the actor Josh Hartnett, he strutted onto the field, flexing his muscles, practicing before the game began. His powerful presence was fierce and domineering, as he took control of the defense every time he stepped onto the field. You just could not take your eyes off him. And when he walked right passed me, tearing off his helmet, sweat pouring down his face, breathing hard, my heart skipped a couple of beats.
Whichever venue Zbikowski decides to pursue after his college days are over next year, it sure will be an exciting future. Professional Football Player making millions playing in the National Football League, doing something you love and that you are great at, that is every man's dream. Or will it be top-secret spy missions that risk your life every time you accept an assignment? How exciting to have two vastly different endeavors to choose from. I wonder which one Tom Zbikowski will choose? I wonder if he has already made up his mind or he is still deciding? Either way, whichever profession he decides upon, he will definitely have a grand escape out of the ordinary, mundane, life that everyone will surely envy!
