"Get your popcorn ready," was the command that Terrell Owens gave when signing with the Dallas Cowboys during the 2006 off-season. Well, Several people got their popcorn, but were not as impressed with T.O. as he was with himself. Last season ended on a very sour note for the Cowboys. I'm sure most football fans remember the blunder made by Tony Romo in the NFC wildcard game against the Seattle Seahawks. Not only has Romo rebounded from that mishap, but it appears as if the whole team has set out to achieve what was within their grasp just last season. T.O. is obviously known for "sick nasty" skills and athleticism, but he is known just as much for his motor mouth and arrogance. The media loves T.O. because T.O. seems to love the media. He always voices his opinions and does not seem to know how to hold anything back.....until October 10, 2007. This day will always and forever remain infamous (like Romo's blunder) because T.O. had nothing to say to the media. Owens did not receive publicity for what he said, but instead for the first time, he is receiving publicity for what he did not say. T.O. chose to leave an oversized, typewritten letter for the media:
"Dear Reporters,
Due to the magnitude of this week's game and high volume of questions for the Original 81 about the other 81. I will be taking all questions immediately following Sunday's game.
Sincerely, (followed by Owens' signature)
p.s. Getcha Popcorn Ready."
A letter? Two conclusions can be made from this: 1) T.O. is actually nervous about Sunday's game or 2) He really wants his actions to speak louder than his words.
If T.O. is nervous, it is quite understandable. Hello.......he is going against the New England Patriots, a team that appears to be unstoppable; a team who has several players with multiple Superbowl rings; a team that is relentless and hungry for victory. Nervous? No, most would be trembling with fear, but that does not seem like Owens' style. Therefore, maybe T.O. is actually maturing and accepting that yes, he is one of the most talented receivers to play the game, but what does it mean without the ring? And as talented as "the original 81" may be he cannot get the ring alone. During the game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, T.O. showed what appeared to be signs of a more focused and patient receiver. Instead of becoming angry and frustrated with Romo after his five interceptions and fumble (like he has done in the past with those like McNabb in Philly), T.O. encouraged the QB. Not like the T.O. we know, but maybe this will be the T.O. we grow to love.
With all of that being said, I hope that you all have your popcorn ready for Sunday because this will surely be a clash of the NFL titans.
