I cannot take it any longer. This has been the best season ever for me. You know how we watch shows like Heroes, Lost or Grey's Anatomy? Well, that is what this football season feels like for me. I want to know how it will all end, but at the same time I do not have a clue as to what I will do when it does end. Will the Patriots go undefeated? Will Brett Favre have a storybook season? Will Ricky Williams really see the field for the Dolphins before the end of the season? There is just too much stuff to keep me too excited this season. What's a girl to do?
Okay, so we have so many amazing and disappointing things occurring simultaneously I guess I will start with the basics. Both the AFC and NFC have divisions that are playing exceptionally well and they have divisions (AFC and NFC West to be exact) that make me wonder if this is pee- wee football that I am watching. The AFC South is arguably the best division in the league. The AFC South and NFC East both boast records of 26-14, but the AFC South has a much tighter race with much stronger talent overall. At this point in the season, you have to be thinking about the match-up that we saw last year between the Patriots and the Colts for the AFC Championship game. The NFC is not as clear of a picture. The Cowboys seem like they may definitely lock in their spot for the NFC Championship game (which only surprises me apparently), but then you have the Packers who are surprising everyone by playing some great football. The Chargers got off to a slow start, but if they gain some consistency and go back to playing as if Marty Schottenheimer were still the head coach, they might have a chance if they can get past the Broncos.
Thanksgiving is always the time of year where we begin to separate the men from the boys, the ones that show up just for the paycheck verses the ones who show up for the ring, and of course we can finally separate the players who talk the talk from the ones who walk the walk. Amidst the off the field antics, drug abuse, and down right stupidity with guys like Travis Henry, Adam 'Pacman' Jones, Ricky Williams, Marcus Stroud, and my favorite former player, Michael Vick; we actually have some serious football taking place. These guys and several other players who have been suspended for other reasons have played a major role in the performance (or lack there of) of their teams. As of today, Vick and Williams were two people who could have made huge impacts on their team's current season, but the season must go on with or without them. I have lost all sympathy that I attempted to have for these guys at one point, so let's get back to football and leave the foolishness behind.
I will begin with the AFC North. The Steelers are definitely the strongest team in that division, but there are two huge surprises, the Browns and the Ravens. The Ravens were expected to be doing much better than 4-6 right now and the Browns were expected to be worse than 6-4, just behind the 7-3 Steelers. Anything could shake the division up at this point after the Steelers lost to the Jets this Sunday.
If we are going to talk about anything shaking a team up, we have got to talk about the AFC South. If the Colts lose on Turkey Day and the Jaguars win against the Bills this Sunday, we will be witnessing a leader for the first time in a long time in that division. The Colts and Jaguars will meet after this week and with the physicality of the Jaguars against the injuries and the bruised ego of Manning, we will just have to wait to see what happens. The Titans seemed to have lost their thunder after losing to the Jaguars and Broncos, but they are still in it as well. Even the Texans still have a shot in this division with only one game separating each team from the one above it.
The same cannot be said about the AFC East. The Patriots are the only possible leaders there with a 10-0 record and the Dolphins are holding steady as the last team in the division (and league) with a record of 0-10. The Bills (5-5) and Jets (2-8) are just hanging around in the middle.
The Raiders are sitting at the bottom of the AFC West with a 2-8 record while the Chargers and Broncos are tied for first with 5-5 records. The Chargers have been very inconsistent this year and although Norv Turner is thought of as an offensive genius, as the head coach of a football team that went 14-2 last season by running the football, it does not take a genius to figure out that L.T. needs the ball more and the other guys need to be picking up some major blocks for him. The Broncos seem to be pulling it together after their players' only meeting and have the potential to do some real damage. The Chiefs are nipping at their hills with a record of 4-6, but they just do not appear good enough to take the top spot.
On to the NFC. The biggest shocker in the NFC North would have to be the Bears. They are tied for last place with the Vikings. The Bears defense that I drafted higher than a QB last season in fantasy football is not looking like the aggressive defense that they have become famous for throughout franchise history. The Lions are doing well considering where they were last year. They are in second place at 6-4. The feel good story of the year belongs to the beloved Packers. They are 9-1 and leading the division by three games. I call this the division of surprises.
If the NFC North is the division of surprises, the NFC South is the mediocrity of the entire NFL. The Bucs lead with a 6-4 record while the Panthers and Saints are tied for second place with 4-6 records and the Falcons are at the bottom with a 3-7 season. None of these teams appear to be real Super Bowl contenders. If this was not a season where teams were not still undefeated or at 9-1 maybe they would have some glimmer of hope, but as of now they do not. I hope that whatever team makes it into the playoffs has fun because they will not be going too far.
The Cowboys, on the other hand, could go all the way. Their first place standing in the NFC East with a 9-1 record is pretty solid as of now. The Giants are a fairly strong team this season and are two wins behind the Cowboys with a 7-3 record. The Redskins and Eagles are tied for last place at 5-5.
And finally, we have the NFC West. The Seahawks seem to be the strongest team in the division with a 6-4 record, but they are not playing as such. The Cardinals are right behind them at 5-5 and at the bottom of the barrel we have the 2-8 Rams and 49ers. I doubt much will come out of this division just as I do not expect much from the NFC North.
Now that everyone is all caught up, make sure that you carve that turkey early this Thanksgiving so that you can get a good seat and get comfy before the games begin. The Cowboys and the Jets along with the Colts and Falcons will be our entertainment this year (along with family and friends of course), but do not get too comfy with your seat because if the Jets, Falcons, or both upset their opponents, the most wonderful time of the year could turn into a nightmare for Cowboys and Colts fans, but hey if you do not have the stomach to watch, I heard that Grey's Anatomy will be pretty good that night. I hope that you are all ready for some serious football from now through February. In the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving!
