The
strategy I employed in my picks last week, the use of reverse psychology, or convoluted
logic, worked like a charm. For ten weeks I have picked the San Francisco
Forty Niners to win. But after eight weeks of futility I had reached the
low point in my blind faith. The Forty Niners were limping into Arizona with a
35 year old second string quarterback, a gimpy Frank Gore and a defense weighed
down by a lack of offensive productivity Therefore I picked against my
49ers and held my breath. Sports fans accept that there are seasons of misery,
they accept that the best laid plans go awry, they accept that there doesn't seem
to be a magic formula for winning, at least not on a consistent basis. One
week a team is great, the next mediocre. It's the best and at the same times the
worst of times for true fans. I have been a 49ers fan since the early 70's.
They were horrific but I didn't suffer too many lost seasons before they became
the Team of the Decades. That ship however has sailed, and in fact it sailed in
1995. This season a disappointed fan can point to many other fans with broken
dreams, the Jets, the Bengals, the Rams and the Bears to name a few. On
the other side of the happiness spectrum are fans of the Patriots, Packers, Cowboys,
Colts, Browns and Lions. So there I sit on Sunday with no false hopes
and simply asking the football gods to allow us to score one touchdown and hopefully
keep me engaged for the full three hours. Pleaseee.. But this game was
anything but boring, it was simply a hoot. The Cardinals and Niners played
the game of the week. there were big plays after big plays. There were lost opportunities
and trick plays. This game was the most fun you can have while laying horizontally
on your back. In the end the Forty Niners won a thrilling game and it felt
as if we had just won a Super Bowl. I'm sure that the players, coaches, and everyone
associated with this team felt relief, exhilaration and renewed hope. For
this fan it felt like I could fly without wings. Instant Replay
