Aaron and Rhonda tackle a couple of this past week's highlights and issues.
1 st down-Are the Detroit Lions for real?
Aaron: After improving their record to 6-2 with a drubbing of the Broncos it's hard not to take the Lions at least semi-seriously. Now do not get me wrong, I don't think Detroit is on the same level as Dallas or even the Saints but in a very weak NFC it's not a stretch to think they can overtake the Green Bay Packers for the North crown. The players believe in the system that the coaches have set up and Jon Kitna has become one of the top leaders in the entire league. Now if only they could talk Barry Sanders into coming back.
Rhonda: Hard to believe, but yes, they are. What a turnaround from last season. General manager Matt Millen is looking good for the first time in his tenure. Trading quarterback Joey Harrington and acquiring Jon Kitna may not have looked the best at the time but it's paying dividends now. Look for them to be contending for the NFC North title with the Green Bay Packers.
2 nd down- Should Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson be considered for Most Valuable Player?
Aaron: With all due respect to Tom Brady, if I had to vote right now I would go with Peterson. He has single handedly carried the Vikings on his back, and of course, feet. This guy can do it all-just ask the Bears who Peterson toasted. He leads the league in rushing by a ton; he is currently 310 yards ahead of the next best rusher, Pittsburgh Steelers Willie Parker. All this from a rookie people thought would have problems staying healthy. Oh, yeah, he just broke the record for rushing yards in a game. If he can keep this up, it's going to be hard to argue against him, Brady or no Brady.
Rhonda: For the season he's having as a rookie , why not? Setting the all time rushing record of 296 yards in a game this past Sunday should certainly give him some looks by the voters. About the only one holding him back at this point is New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Keep on running like that the rest of the season and he should be Rookie of the Year, if not MVP.
3 rd down- Should Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid step down for the rest of the season?
Aaron: This one is easy. Yes, yes, yes, and yes again. It's time for Eagles ownership to step in and tell Reid to take a leave of absence. This issue with Reid's sons is a million times more distracting then anything Terrell Owens ever pulled. The last thing this team needs is more distractions and their play on the field is proving it. A Sunday night beat down at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys was just the latest in a season full of disappointment. Many believe that quarterback Donovan McNabb is on his way out and if not for this problem with his sons, I think Reid would be leaving with him. Reid needs to go and get his home life in order, whatever it takes for however long it takes. Hopefully next season, the team and Reid can put all this behind them and everyone can just focus on football.
Rhonda: Yes, yes, and yes. Management needs to step up and ask Reid to consider taking a leave of absence if he doesn't. Everyone in the football family is behind him too. He needs to take a break from the rigors of football and concentrate on getting his family back on the right track. Reid is much too good of a person to be dealing with the off field issues that his sons have. They say "family first" for good reason.
4 th down- Is this Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis' last season at the helm?
Aaron: Turn out the lights the party is over. When a team that has as much promise as the Bengals have had the last few seasons and don't live up to it, the coach is the first to go. This will be no exception. It's become apparent that he has lost the confidence of his players who have openly questioned his coaching decisions this season. The defense has been atrocious to say the very least and if you recall Lewis was supposed to be a defensive minded coach when he came to Cincinnati . If team management brought back Lewis, I think the entire city would be as surprised as would I. Sadly, this is just another in a long line of African-American coaches that have failed giving owners one more reason not to hire the next one to come along.
Rhonda: No, unless he decides it is. What a great coach to be having this kind of season. He went into Cincinnati and turned a team around that had been horrible for years. With wide receiver Chad Johnson going out of the game on Sunday with an injury, it may be hard for them to recover. Expect Lewis to stay in Cincinnati and count this year as a bump in the road.
