Still Faithful after All These Years
By Ivette Ricco
The ground hasn't stopped shaking in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Another earthquake? Well, sort of. Only this isn't the run of the mill 7.0 on the Richter shaker we Californians are used to. This is a 10.0 wall rattling, ground shaking quake of a different magnitude.
Last week John York, co-owner of the San Francisco 49ers made a sudden announcement, the 49ers were giving up on the proposed new stadium at Candlestick Point and concentrating their efforts on building a new state-of-the art stadium 30 miles south, in the greener pastures of Santa Clara.
This major quake has been followed by a series of after shocks.
The San Francisco Bay Area has been reeling since that announcement which apparently caught Mayor Gavin Newsome and the 2016 Olympic Committee with their proverbial pants down.
It has now become a political hot potato with Senator Dianne Feinstein joining the bru-ha-ha.
Was this a power play on the part of John York?
John York is not a popular figure in the SF Bay Area, and his handling of the beloved 49ers has come under close and critical scrutiny in the past.
But, perhaps the Yorks have tired of trying to dance to the slow tune of San Francisco politics. It is feasible that in order to build a state of the art stadium for the 49ers in this century the game plan needed a fourth quarter Hail Mary.
Those of us who reside in the SF Bay Area are impatiently waiting for the roads and bridges affected by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake to be fixed. That was over 17 years ago! Things don't move too swiftly in San Francisco .
There is one thing everyone agrees on, it is time the 49ers had a new home. There is no disagreement on the decrepit state of Candlestick Park , one of the oldest stadiums in the league.
According to John York and Denise DeBartolo York, one major consideration aside from the cost involved in building a new stadium at Candlestick Point, is their desire to provide a pleasurable game day experience for the fans. In other words the continuation of Tailgating. It is, they say, what has to take precedence.
What say you fans?
