The Kurt and Brenda Show

Brenda Warner (you know Kurt Warner’s wife)
became almost as famous as her husband during his
1999 “Cinderella” season. That was the
year the former stock boy, former Arena Football
League and NFL Europe quarterback, led the St. Louis
Rams to a Super Bowl victory. That was the year Kurt
Warner came off the bench for an injured Trent Green
to lead the “Greatest Show on Turf” to
a record-breaking season. The Rams’ offensive
machine had the experts predicting that they would
continue to dominate the league for years and that
Warner would lead them to the promise land, over
and over again.
Ah…but those mischievous football gods, they
can really mess with you. Here it is 2004 and Warner
is no longer a St. Louis Ram, he is Eli Manning’s
tutor, NFL style. Now, Warner will play in the Meadowlands
and hope to play well enough to start. Oh yes those
mischievous football gods, they are poised to sack
you in the end zone.
On the way to the way to the coronation
of the Rams and Warner, Brenda Warner became a
media darling. TV cameras routinely zoomed in on
her as she cheered on her man while sporting her
trendy short spiked hair and long manicured nails.
But Brenda made an impression beyond that of just
a supportive wife. Brenda became an outspoken figure
capable of igniting debate and controversy as quickly
as Kurt tossed a touchdown to Isaac Bruce.
Kurt Warner spent six seasons with the Rams, and
during that time Brenda wasn’t exactly shy
about saying what was on her mind.
In December of 2002 Brenda called KFNS-AM. She wanted
to express an opinion about the level of trust, regarding
injuries, between the Rams coach, Mike Martz and
the Rams’ players being discussed by co-hosts
Bryan Burwell and John Marecek.
Co-host Bryan Burwell questioned whether that level
of trust had been shattered when Kurt Warner discovered
that he had a broken bone, after insisting that his
hand was fine.
Brenda Warner wanted to set the record straight.
When Burwell said it was Martz that who insisted
that Warner get his hand x-rayed, Brenda Warner said, “He
did not. He did not. All week long I said, “Kurt,
I am a nurse. You should get an x-ray.” He
said, “The doctors just think it’s bruised.”
Oh - Oh - Direct hit on Martz.
Now ESPN-1050 has put out feelers for Brenda. They
know she is direct and will go where coaches and
athletes dare not venture. Brenda should fit right
in on NY talk radio, that is of course, unless Kurt
is failing, flailing or doing a face plant.
But in a sports-crazed city and more importantly
in a city that is direct, brutally honest and fanatic
about their teams, Brenda’s directness just
might help light up the switchboards with her soliloquies.
Think of it, Brenda just might have an enduring career,
Kurt, well, not so much.
Joe Buck, Fox’s MLB “voice” lives
in St. Louis. He said that the exchange between Brenda
Warner’s comments with the talk show mouths
might have helped send Kurt Warner out of St. Louis.
Joe Buck said, “At worst you are going to
get a wife’s point of view about what’s
going on with the hot quarterback in town. At best
you’re going to get some kind of controversy
where she may say something that may be considered
out of place.”
“If I’m a New York radio station, and
she is willing to do it, Buck said, “I would
do anything I could to make a deal happen just hoping
Brenda would again stir things up.”
Okay, Kurt and Brenda, New York City is waiting.
Failure is not an option. And to paraphrase a well-known
NFL owner, you need to “Just Win Baby”.
Otherwise, you can just fughedaboutit, because in
New York City, there will be no place to hide.
