Los Angeles Dodgers – WIN Breakfast
By Ivette Ricco, President, Femmefan Inc.
If you’re a regular here at Femmefan.com you know that I have made it my mission to increase the general public’s awareness of women who are avid sports fans and to offer these women a forum in which to voice their opinions.
I have maintained that in order to make an impact on the “powers that be” in the sports industry we would have to make use of our considerable economic clout.
In May of 2005 the Los Angeles Dodgers launched the Women’s Initiative and Network, a program designed to make baseball more accessible to women as a sport, career and business.

Now, there is a female executive in the world of sports who has “stepped up to the plate” and has reached the same conclusion, her name is Jamie McCourt.
Jamie McCourt is a woman who agrees that this demographic has been largely ignored by sports franchises and she has initiated a program that targets this market.
Street & Smith’s SportBusiness Journal, recently named Jamie McCourt, Dodger Vice Chairman and President, as the eighth-most influential woman in sports.
”Our national pastime has long had female fans, executives and owners. We believe that this program will make it easier for all women to appreciate and enjoy the game.”
“Win’s goal is to help promote progress and motivate women of all ages”, said McCourt.
On Friday, September 9, 2005, I attended the “Women in Baseball” career networking breakfast hosted by the Dodgers as part of Women’s Initiative & Network.
This was the final WIN event of the 2005 season and featured a panel discussion and breakfast.
I was encouraged to note that there were about 100 women representing many different ages and ethnicities at this meeting.
And I was very impressed by the women on the panel:
From the Los Angeles Dodgers:
Dodger Vice Chairman and President Jamie McCourt, Kim Ng, Vice President and Assistant General Manager, Cris Hurley, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, and Luchy Guerra, Assistant Director of Player Development.
In addition, Jean Hastings Ardell, author of Breaking Into Baseball: Women and the National Pastime joined the panel and Fox Sports net reporter, Lindsay Soto, led the discussion.
This panel of talented and successful women spoke of their backgrounds and how their careers led them to where they are today. They spoke of the issues facing women in a business long known for its Old Boys mentality. Their candid and honest responses to questions from the women in the audience was further evidence of the “tip of the iceberg” this market and its consumer power it represents.
I hope that this is the beginning of a trend in the world of sports. I hope that Femmefan, Inc. can play a role in the important goals set forth by Jamie McCourt and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
