The Miami Dolphins are making a statment and it is a very positive one.
Since 1997 they have been hosting the Girls High School Flag Football Jamboree.
No other team has a similar program.
On March 31 over 400 female athletes participated in the Girls High School Flag Jamboree in Davie, Florida. The Jamboree was presented by Under Armour.
There were 13 games featuring some of the top programs in the area.
Twan Russell, Miami Dolphins Director of Youth and Community Programs, told Ivette Ricco of Femmefan.com, “This is the purest form of football. These girls work well together and it is really all about ‘team”. They all get a chance to play, and every position is valued.”
Twan says that coaching these young athletes is done in depth, it is not just football 101. They get coached by actual position coaches learning stances, footwork and body control. The young athletes are coached by high school football coaches on how to play the game, this is not powder puff football.
Twan says that this program helps the NFL spread the football gospel and will create a new generation of football fans, and perhaps someday female football players with football leagues of their own.
“I really beleive in the next 10 years that women’s football is going to be a collegiate sport and it is going to explode.
