Q&A With “The Schwab”

Super Brett
By Rhonda Reigstad
Men’s college basketball is heating up, the Super Bowl is over and “who” might be lingering on retirement. All this in the latest edition from ESPN’s sports guru, Howie Schwab.
They are talking about a 96 team tourney for the NCAA Final Four in college basketball. Is this a good idea?
I understand why there is a desire to increase the number of teams to 96. It is about the revenue that would be generated if another layer of games. While I understand the concern as we have added so many more Division I hoop programs getting a cut of the pie, my answer is no. Why water down the tourney further with teams that don’t deserve to be there. Sixty five is a good number and you will always have a few teams saying they belong.
Michigan State men’s basketball got beaten by Illinois over the weekend. Will they still win the Big Ten?
I think so since Kalen Lucas is supposed to be back for the Purdue game. The Spartans almost won at Champaign (I was there) and Draymond Green was super. Durrell Summers and Raymar Morgan have to be more consistent scoring threats without disappearing.
The Saints won the Super Bowl. What kind of impact does this have on the NFL? The city?
Huge impact on both. Good to have a first-time winner and quarterback Drew Brees is a class act. Big on the city which deserved a major positive.
People tend to watch the Super Bowl ads more than the Super Bowl itself. Which were some of your favorite commercials?
I loved the Betty White-Abe Vigoda one (Snickers candy bars). Doritos had a few cute ones…I laughed at several of them. One of the rare times I did not click during commercials.
The age old question, will Brett Favre return next year?
Too early to tell…ask me in eight months (ha, ha)…
